FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026: How India lost semifinal spot despite matching Australia on points, GD

India’s FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign ended in one of the narrowest possible margins after a 0-0 draw against Australia in their crucial second-round clash in Amstelveen on Sunday. Both teams finished level on points and goal difference, but Australia advanced to the semifinals because they had scored more goals in the competition.

The result made India’s failure to find the back of the net against Australia particularly costly. With the two sides tied on the first two criteria, goals scored became the deciding factor, and Australia had the edge after scoring once against China.

Numbers that knocked India out

India, Australia and China were all left fighting for the second semifinal spot behind the Netherlands. The Netherlands finished comfortably at the top after beating India 2-0 and China 4-1. Australia had earlier drawn 1-1 against China, while India had also drawn against China in the opening stage.

After India and Australia played out a goalless draw, both teams ended up on two points in the second round. The next comparison was goal difference. India and Australia were level there as well. That meant the next tiebreaker, goals scored, decided Australia’s fate.

Australia had scored one goal against China, while India failed to score in their two second-round matches against the Netherlands and Australia. That single goal ultimately separated the two teams and sent Australia into the semifinals.

India needed just one goal

The heartbreak for India came from how close the qualification equation was. The Indian defence successfully kept Australia scoreless, but the team could not produce the goal that would have changed the standings. Despite creating opportunities, India were unable to break Australia’s defence during the 0-0 draw.

The Australians also had their chances, but India’s defensive unit held firm throughout the contest. In the end, the clean sheet was not enough. India needed a goal of their own to strengthen their position in the tiebreaker.

Australia’s earlier goal proved decisive

Australia’s 1-1 draw against China turned out to be hugely significant. That goal meant Australia entered the final standings with one goal scored in the second round. India, meanwhile, finished without a goal in their two matches in the second phase.

Once the points and goal difference were level, that solitary Australian goal became the difference between a semifinal berth and elimination.

India’s World Cup campaign continues

Although India missed out on the semifinals, their tournament is not over. The team will now compete in the classification match for fifth place. The defeat to Australia ended India’s hopes of reaching the last four, but the campaign had already seen them remain in contention until the final match of the second round.

For Australia, the 0-0 draw was enough to secure a semifinal place. For India, it was a result that highlighted how one goal, or the lack of one, can decide a World Cup campaign.
