Social media influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj has been formally arrested by Delhi Police following his detention in Uttar Pradesh. The arrest stems from an alleged physical assault on the father of a 14-year-old CJP activist during a July protest at Jantar Mantar.

Following his production at a judge’s residence within the Karkardooma Court complex, Bhardwaj was remanded to one-day police custody as law enforcement faces heightened public scrutiny and protests outside station boundaries.

Detention in Uttar Pradesh and court remand

Authorities tracked and detained Bhardwaj in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday, hours after representatives of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) pressed Delhi Police for immediate action.

Residential arraignment: News agency ANI reported that Bhardwaj was produced before the concerned judicial officer at their residential quarters within the Karkardooma Court complex on Saturday.

Custody status: The court granted a one-day police custody remand to allow investigators to question the accused regarding his public statements and actions.

Security tightening: Security outside the Parliament Street police station was heavily reinforced with barricades and paramilitary deployments after Bhardwaj’s supporters threatened to gather for counter-demonstrations.

Escalating legal charges: POCSO and SC/ST Act provisions

The legal gravity of the case intensified significantly following online remarks made by the accused and subsequent complaints filed by victim representatives.

POCSO integration: A fresh FIR was registered against Bhardwaj under the POCSO Act based on a complaint by the minor activist alleging severe online harassment and threats.

Additional provisions: Delhi Police incorporated sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, criminal intimidation, and relevant BNS provisions after an interview surfaced wherein Bhardwaj boasted about assaulting the victim.

Initial medical findings: Police previously noted that the injuries sustained by Sanjay Kumar were initially classified as simple in nature, attributed to impact from a steel bracelet during the July 20 altercation.

CJP protests and public backlash

The arrest follows intensive demonstrations staged by the CJP outside the Parliament Street police station demanding stringent legal action, including attempt-to-murder charges.

While Bhardwaj later claimed in a podcast that his actions constituted self-defense, investigators are continuing to review digital evidence, witness testimonies, and compliance with statutory demands as the custody period proceeds.
