Rajya Sabha MP of Shiv Sena (UBT) Sanjay Raut filed an unconditional apology affidavit with the Supreme Court after making some offensive statements towards Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and the Indian judiciary. In his document, Raut clarified that he has respect for the judiciary’s independence and dignity. He added that there was no intention to hurt the prestige of the highest judicial body in the country.
Expresses deep regret for unverified public statements
It is stated in the affidavit of Raut that several of his public statements were made without proper verification which led to the improper remarks about the judiciary.
Unconditional regret: In his affidavit, he offered an “unconditional apology” for the statements he made.
No intent to defame: The politician clarified that the purpose of his statements was not defaming the Supreme Court and challenging its authority and the integrity of the sitting judges.
Pledge of restraint: He promised that he will be very cautious while making any statements regarding judicial matters in the future.
Missing records and absence of counsel lead to personal summons
As observed during the court hearing scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, 2026, there were some procedural mistakes leading to stringent instructions issued by the court.
The court realised that the hard copy of the apology affidavit by Raut was not available in the judicial record, and that there was no lawyer representing the UBT Shiv Sena leader during the hearing of the case.
Thus, the Supreme Court instructed Sanjay Raut to personally attend the court hearing scheduled for November 17, 2026.
