The Supreme Court set aside the bail given to Mokama MLA Anant Kumar Singh, a politician widely known in Bihar as a “Bahubali,” in the murder of rival strongman Dularchand Yadav.
A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and PV Varale ordered Singh to surrender to the authorities by December 1.
The court held that the Patna High Court erred in releasing him on bail, as it did not give due weight to the seriousness of the offence and his long record of criminal cases.
The order comes as Singh’s political standing is collapsing. The ruling Janata Dal (United) recently expelled him and his wife for six years, citing anti-party activities.
In the Patna Graduates’ constituency election to the Legislative Council, Singh backed Jan Suraaj candidate Anuj Kumar Singh instead of the JD(U)’s official nominee, Neeraj Kumar.
He put his own workers to work for the rival campaign. He is also accused of using insulting language against the party’s top leaders, taking personal swipes at senior office-bearers and publicly questioning how the leadership runs the party.
After the expulsion, the state government removed his wife, Neelam Devi, from the State-Level Programme Implementation Committee.
This ended her Minister of State rank and her right to an official bungalow. On October 26, 2026, the Building Construction Department served her an eviction notice asking her to vacate the bungalow at 1, Mall Road, Patna. JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha has also petitioned Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar to disqualify Singh under the anti-defection law and end his membership of the House.
Dularchand Yadav, a strongman in the region, was killed on October 30, 2025, during a violent clash in Mokama Tal while campaigning for the Assembly election was on.
Yadav was backing Jan Suraaj Party candidate Piyush Priyadarshi, and his supporters clashed with Singh’s convoy that day.
The FIR at Ghoswari police station alleges that Singh and his associates pulled Yadav out of his vehicle, shot him in the leg, beat him and then ran an SUV over him.
Singh has called the incident a political conspiracy by a rival politician and says Jan Suraaj supporters attacked his convoy first.
Bihar Police arrested Singh on November 1, 2025, and he was held in Beur Central Jail. He still won the Mokama seat on a JD(U) ticket while in custody.
The Patna High Court granted him bail on March 19, 2026, and he came out of jail. In October 2026, Neeraj Kumar, described as the grandson of Dularchand Yadav, challenged the bail order in the Supreme Court.
