Decades after Subhash Ghai’s 1993 cult action classic Khalnayak redefined Indian cinema, the celebrated director is preparing for its highly anticipated sequel, Khalnayak Returns. In an exciting development for fans, actors Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt could soon share screen space once again, with reports suggesting that the makers are designing a key role with Salman in mind.
While Sanjay Dutt is set to reprise his iconic role as the anti-hero Ballu, the writing team is reportedly developing a high-impact character specifically tailored for Salman Khan.
Salman Khan eyed to play cop supporting Sanjay Dutt’s Ballu
According to a report by Mid-Day, Subhash Ghai and his team of writers are crafting a special character who plays a pivotal role in the narrative. The character is envisioned as a helpful police officer and good Samaritan who aids Sanjay Dutt’s character throughout the film.
“The role impacts the narrative. The idea is that the cop, a good Samaritan, will help Sanjay’s character. Who better than Salman to play this helpful character?” an insider revealed to the publication. “The casting is not locked yet as the script is still being developed.”
Subhash Ghai responds: “Too early to say anything”
Addressing the intense speculation around Salman Khan joining the cast, filmmaker Subhash Ghai maintained a cautious stance, confirming that the script is still in active development.
“It’s too early to say anything,” Ghai told the publication. “The scripting is still on, and once we have a complete script, we will know where we stand.”
If the collaboration goes through, Khalnayak Returns will mark Salman Khan’s second project with Subhash Ghai after their 2008 romantic drama Yuvvraaj, alongside bringing back the electrifying dynamic between Salman and Sanjay Dutt on the big screen.
What’s next on Salman Khan’s work front?
Aside from the discussions around Khalnayak Returns, Salman Khan is currently gearing up for the release of his upcoming war drama, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace. Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the film draws inspiration from the real-life 2020 military confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley.
The film features an ensemble cast including Chitrangda Singh, Ankur Bhatia, and Abhilash Chaudhary alongside Salman in the lead.
