Bad news for Shehbaz Sharif, Asim Munir as China plans to run away from copper and gold mines in Balochistan, why is this big trouble for Islamabad?

Former Pakistan Finance Minister Hafeez Pasha said China may withdraw from the Saindak Copper-Gold Mine in Balochistan due to worsening terrorism and security concerns. He also claimed that several multinational companies, including Shell, Procter & Gamble, and pharmaceutical firms, have already left Pakistan because of the country’s unstable security situation.

What is the major setback for Pakistan?

Pakistan’s efforts to attract foreign investment by promoting Balochistan’s rich gold and copper reserves have suffered a setback. Pasha said China could exit the Saindak mining project if security conditions continue to worsen. He also warned that instead of attracting new investors, Pakistan is losing existing foreign companies.

When did the latest warning emerge?

The issue gained attention after the Chinese company Saindak Metals Limited sent a warning letter to Pakistan’s Energy Minister in July 2026. The company said it could suspend mining operations within a month if security-related disruptions to supplies continued. Pasha’s comments also come after recent militant attacks in Balochistan.

Where is the Saindak Copper-Gold Mine located?

The Saindak Copper-Gold Mine is located in Balochistan, Pakistan, one of the country’s most resource-rich provinces. The mine is jointly operated by China’s Metallurgical Corporation and Pakistan’s Saindak Metals Limited (SML), with much of the extracted copper exported to China.

Why is China reportedly considering an exit?

China is reportedly concerned about increasing terrorist attacks, security threats, and disruptions to mining operations. The company has warned that the movement of essential equipment and supplies has been severely affected, making it difficult to continue operations safely.

How are security concerns affecting Pakistan’s investment plans?

Repeated attacks by Baloch insurgent groups on Chinese projects and personnel have raised the risks for foreign investors. According to Hafeez Pasha, terrorism, political instability, and governance issues are discouraging new investment and forcing multinational companies to leave Pakistan, further weakening the country’s economy.
