Senior leader Kalyan Banerjee from the Trinamool Congress was injured on Sunday after a clash broke out outside the Chanditala police station in West Bengal’s Hooghly district. The incident took place when TMC supporters had gathered to submit a memorandum demanding the release of their arrested leaders and workers.

What led to the clash?

According to reports, the situation turned tense when workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party confronted the TMC supporters. BJP workers allegedly raised aggressive slogans against the ruling party and called the protesters “thieves,” which further escalated tensions.

What started as a protest quickly turned into a heated face-off between the two groups. The atmosphere became chaotic, forcing authorities to step in. A large number of local police personnel, along with central security forces, were deployed to control the situation and prevent further violence.

How was Kalyan Banerjee injured?

During the clash, Kalyan Banerjee suffered a head injury. Visuals from the scene showed him holding a wet handkerchief to his head, indicating bleeding. The TMC MP later condemned the attack and claimed that he was deliberately targeted while heading toward the police station to submit the memorandum.

He described the incident as an unprovoked assault and said that he and his party members were only exercising their democratic right to protest peacefully.

The incident comes just a day after another senior TMC leader, Abhishek Banerjee, was attacked in Sonarpur. Abhishek had gone there to meet the family of a party worker allegedly affected by post-poll violence.

As he stepped out of his vehicle, a mob reportedly raised slogans against him. The situation soon turned violent. Some individuals allegedly slapped and punched him before security personnel intervened and escorted him to safety.
