As Mahela Jayawardene leaves the Mumbai Indians, the hunt for the franchise’s next head coach has already started. On Saturday, Mumbai Indians announced that Jayawardene has decided to step down from his role, after about a decade of association with the franchise. Sources within the Mumbai Indians have revealed that the owners have prepared a 5-man shortlist for the head coach’s role, with the interview process set to begin from Sunday. Among the 5 names shortlisted for the role, there are two Australians, including former Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey.
Sources told NDTV that other than Hussey, Aaron Finch, Adrian Birrell, Mark Boucher and Eoin Morgan are the names who will start giving interviews. With the IPL 2027 auction not too far, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the name of Jayawardene’s successor is announced in the coming days.
Michael Hussey is undoubtedly among the strongest contenders, having held a coaching position with the Chennai franchise for a period of 9 years. Known as “Mr. Cricket,” his calm, methodical approach is excellent for player development and stabilising high-pressure environments. He understands Indian pitches, conditions, and opposition strategies intimately, which makes him an asset.
Aaron Finch, who led Australia to the 2021 T20 World Cup title, might also be an interesting candidate. Over the years, he has demonstrated clear strategic foresight and leadership to deliver under pressure. His experience of playing for multiple IPL franchises also gives him a thorough understanding of the tournament’s landscape and Indian conditions.
As for Eoin Morgan, he is the man who revolutionised England’s white-ball culture with an aggressive, data-driven approach that aligns with MI’s brand of high-octane cricket. He is regarded as one of the finest modern tactical minds in white-ball cricket, someone who excels in matchups, resource management, and situational tactics.
Having led an England side full of superstars, he might be best equipped to manage MI’s dressing room which has the likes of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and other tier-1 players.
Mark Boucher is also an interesting name, having served as MI head coach in 2023-2024, while also overseeing the 2023 playoff run. However, his tenure was marked by friction within the team, notably during the 2024 captaincy transition to Hardik Pandya, who had replaced Rohit Sharma at the helm.
Adrian Birrell is the only one who comes from a non-player background as far as the IPL landscape is concerned. But he is a highly respected technical coach with deep experience across international setups like Ireland and South Africa. He has a proven track record in building structure, discipline, and developing raw talent.
