A US military aircraft landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport on Tuesday, raising questions about the reason for the unusual flight at a time when tensions between Washington and Moscow remain high over the Ukraine conflict. According to reports and Flightradar data, the aircraft was likely a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, a heavy military transport plane mainly used by the US Air Force to carry personnel, military equipment and other cargo over long distances.
Flight tracking data showed that the aircraft, with the callsign RCH4555 and registration 07-7181, took off from Riga, Latvia, at around 8:50 am and landed in Moscow shortly after 10 am.
The reason for the aircraft’s rare visit to Moscow is not yet known. Neither the US nor Russia has issued an official statement about the flight. The Kremlin told Reuters that it had no information about the aircraft.
Why did the US military Jet land in Moscow?
The aircraft’s flight history shows that it arrived in Riga on August 23 after departing from Camp Springs in Maryland, home to Andrews Air Force Base. The base is an important US military facility and is also associated with Air Force One, used by the US president.
The unexpected arrival of the US military transport aircraft in Russia has led to several theories online. Andrews Air Force Base is a major hub for transporting senior US government officials and their support teams.
However, the presence of the C-17 does not necessarily mean that a senior US official was on board. Such aircraft are often used to transport personnel, vehicles, communications equipment and other supplies ahead of official visits
.In recent weeks, there has been speculation that US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth could travel to Moscow in an effort to revive stalled diplomatic efforts over the Ukraine conflict.
Possible link to Ukraine peace talks
Diplomatic efforts between the US and Russia to end the Ukraine war have largely stalled, while US President Donald Trump has also shifted attention towards the Iran conflict.
Last week, reports suggested that US and European officials had prepared a new proposal for Moscow as part of efforts to restart negotiations.
Some reports have also suggested that the arrival of the C-17 could be linked to a possible visit by US special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to Moscow for another round of talks on the Ukraine conflict.
However, there has been no official confirmation linking the aircraft’s arrival to any upcoming diplomatic meeting.
