Delhi HC grants 2020 Delhi riots accused Umar Khalid 3-day interim bail for…

The Delhi High Court on Friday granted three days of interim bail to student activist Umar Khalid, allowing him to visit his ailing mother, who is scheduled to undergo surgery. Khalid, who is currently in judicial custody in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots larger conspiracy case, had recently been denied interim bail by the trial court before approaching the High Court.

The court has permitted Khalid’s release from June 1 to June 3. During this period, he will also be allowed to attend the Chehlum ceremony of his uncle, who passed away last month.

Court notes past compliance, flags case gravity

While granting relief, the court observed that Khalid had previously complied with conditions imposed during earlier interim bail for family-related occasions.

At the same time, the court noted that he is alleged to be ‘one of the key conspirators’ in the case, but still granted limited relief in view of his mother’s medical condition.

Strict movement restrictions imposed

The High Court imposed stringent conditions on Khalid’s movement during the bail period. He has been directed to remain either at his designated residence or the hospital where his mother is admitted.

He has been explicitly barred from visiting any other location and must remain within the National Capital Region (NCR) throughout the interim bail period.

Bail conditions and monitoring

As part of the conditions, Khalid has been directed to furnish a surety bond of ₹1 lakh. The court also ordered that he use only one mobile phone number during the interim bail period.

Delhi High Court is hearing matters related to Khalid’s arrest under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the alleged conspiracy behind the communal violence in northeast Delhi in February 2020.
